What is egg donation?

The Egg Donation program is an IVF treatment using oocytes from a donor to help to improve the chance of achieving a pregnancy.

Using oocytes donor may help women with fertility problems to achieve pregnancy more easily and securely.

Different factors can affect the ovaries, such as the woman’s age, problems with ovulation, problems with the uterus, blocked fallopian tubes, early menopause, genetic diseases, and the effects of chemotherapy or radiotherapy. This can cause the ovaries to lose their capability of producing good quality eggs.

Oocyte donation can be used in IVF and Surrogacy programs and is completely legal under Ukrainian law. At ilaya, we’ve got access to a growing database of donor candidates which meet the different physical features and phenotypes that our patients require.

Who can use donor eggs?

Pregnancy after egg donation
  • Women with polycystic ovarian reserve
  • Women with low ovarian reserve
  • Women with early menopause
  • Women who produce low-quality eggs or who do not respond well to hormonal treatment
  • When assisted reproduction treatments have failed on various occasions
  • Women that suffer from a genetic disease
  • When the access to the ovaries through a surgical procedure is complicated

How to choose a donor

Egg donation in Ukraine is anonymous, however, with the donor’s consent, we are able to provide a photograph.
Currently, we offer two different approaches to the selection of donor profiles for Intended Parents (IPs):

We give IPs temporary access to our extensive database, and they choose their donor themselves

We ask IPs to complete a questionnaire where they select their desired phenotype and characteristics. They can also send us a photograph of themselves to help us to match them with the best candidate.

Egg Donor profiles

The donors are all young healthy women and are screened before being accepted into any program. Prior to the donation, all donors carry out all medical examinations, genetic studies and psychological surveys, according to the requirements. Additionally, they must meet the following requirements as established by the Ministry of Health in Ukraine:

  • Be aged between 18 and 36
  • Have at least one healthy child of their own
  • The absence of any hereditary diseases, be completely healthy and abstain from any bad habits
  • Pass extensive medical exams

Steps of the egg donation process

1

Ovarian stimulation of the donor and egg retrieval

Donors are given a hormonal treatment to artificially induce the production of multiple ovarian follicles during one menstrual cycle. By doing this, instead of producing one egg which is what happens in a normal menstrual cycle, several eggs may be produced. The treatment usually takes around 14 days until the follicular cells containing the oocytes are removed from the donor through a surgical procedure called transvaginal ultrasound aspiration or follicular puncture. The number of oocytes obtained per cycle varies greatly for each woman.

2

Fertilisation and embryo transfer

After obtaining the donor eggs (oocytes) and assessing their quality and maturity, they are fertilised by the sperm. An Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is the most accurate insemination technique used in IVF to form embryos – a single sperm cell of good quality is injected directly into the cytoplasm of an egg.
After the embryos have developed, an embryo transfer is scheduled.
